If you saw an old man rip off some child’s nose, it would involve the police and the press. However, when my grandfather did the “I got your nose” bit, no one called the cops. Because the “nose” wasn’t frikkin real.
I do believe that some aspects of RL ethics come into play online, but only in a certain way. The ships are not real. The isk and mods and salvage are not real. The only thing real is the players. Personally, I keep my word. Because it is my word, and I am real. But I am not going to feel guilty for “stealing” isk or mods, or “killing” ships or pods, because they are no more real than the nose my grandfather “got”.
The way I relate to people is based on my RL sense of self, and that includes online. I keep my word, I treat people decently when they treat me decently, etc. However, other than the players, nothing in EvE is real.

This is probably one of the best posts I’ve seen out of Paul in a long time. Kudos.

I had read Hallan’s post a while back, and I have to say my reaction is the same as Paul’s. Loudly declaring on your website, “It’s just my opinion, but honor is important” is similar to nature to someone saying “It’s just my opinion, but this Jesus guy was God!”.

If it’s your opinion, and you don’t want people to argue with it, shut up =)

I read it as an attempt to say “everyone should play by my rules of honor” without actually saying that.

It’s personal though, not a judgement of your playstyle.

If I do it, it’s repulsive. If you do it, I think it adds to the game. Someone has to do it, it just isn’t me. I get annoyed when the other guys disrespect my choice on the matter.

It bothers me because you obviously DO hold it against me:

“I honor ransoms. I honor duels. I do what I say I’m going to do. If I don’t, I can’t pretend it’s just my character doing it, because I know better.”

Here you make very clear that morality in-game is the same as morality out-of-game. It’s a nice little stab after the disclaiming preface, sort of like “Now, I’m no racist, but…”

In fact, I think that if you look at your post, then at mine, you’ll find that I afford your play style plenty of respect, while you give mine nothing but the lip-service with which you attempt to escape the appearance of a double standard.
